So like I said earlier, december is usually a month of joy and numerous celebrations for me.
For one thing, it ushers in the christmas spirit and all the other good stuff that comes along with christmas, and one of those for me, is Zees birthday.
If you read the first part of this story here, you’d recall I had to be super sneaky in order to pull off my full surprise plan.
Zee’s first work day after christmas left me with just about 24 hours to his birthday.
But I wasn’t about to let my limited time frame discourage me. I’ve kinda developed a spine for working under pressure.
He kissed me goodbye and left for work like every other day, but this time, I didn’t hug my duvet for the next few more hours.
As soon as I heard the door shut, I sprung to my feet.
Determined to pull this off with so little time left, I used one of my quick favourite vanilla cake recipes.
By noon I was halfway making this one and by 5pm I had begun making the ice bucket.
Now for the real exciting part. 11am, birthday day, he was out of his first meeting and had called me to say the birthday cakes had already started pouring in.
I decided it was time to send mine and even though I hadn’t completed the ice bucket, the heineken bottle crown was ready to go!
Minutes later I got the call I’d expected. I had told the person delivering to stall my identity for a while.
ZEE: Wow! Wow! Sweetheart, when did you do this?
ME: (Laughing really hard) I knew it’ll be a big surprise to you.
ZEE: (Laughing with me) Like, how? when? where? But we were together all the time, How come I didn’t perceive any cake in the house?
ME: (Still laughing hard) Exactly all the questions I want running through your mind.
ZEE: (Still aughing)Mehn! this is really a fantastic surprise! Wow! Gosh!…….
…..and we laughed some more and talked about how he didnt want to cut it that day anymore but keep it for an event the next day.😍
Hang on, the story isn’t over yet! I had one more remember! He got home from work and saw the ice bucket cake.
BOOM! Nailed another surprise again! 😄 😅 LOL
It goes without saying, Zee had an incredible day, and I’m super happy and proud to have been a part of that.
Okay, so now let me explain to you how you can make sugar cubes out of your regular cane sugar when you don’t have isomalt within reach.
HARD CANDY FOR SUGAR CUBES RECIPE
- 1 Cup Granulated Sugar
- 1/4 Cup Water
- 1/4 Cup Corn Syrup
- 1/2 Tsp Food Flavouring (Optional)
- Food Colouring (Optional)
Cook all first three ingredients to 3000F , but if you don’t have a thermometer as well, rely on the good old water test.
Once your sugar starts to thicken, intermittently, drop a drop ( pun intended) into a small bowl of water. If it’s still soft, it isn’t yet ready.
If it hardens up instantly take your sugar down from the fire and allow a few seconds pass for it to stop bubbling.
At this stage you can stir in your flavouring or use straight away.
Always ensure your ice cavity is properly greased with some sort of food oil before pouring in your hot sugar. I learned the hard truth about setting hard candy the hard way. 😅 hehehe
